It is easy and simpler to count calorie in a raw food article say 100 gm of wheat flour or rice or potato or banana when we know its composition in terms of carbohydrates, fats and proteins but practically we use a few of them as raw otherwise they are used in form of one or other preparation. There it becomes difficult to say calorie count or value of any prepared food item because it varies and depends on how it was prepared beside that what it contains in terms of size and composition. Method of preparation of a food item varies widely with the taste and style of the person who prepared it. Regional culture and living style of the people also affect it. Therefore, there could be a wide variation in amount of calories in the same item, for example take paratha or puri or gulab jamun and even dahi bada, the calories in it depends not only on size but also how deeply it was fried. At the same time, what is added to make it tastier should be counted to the calories in the final preparation as curry or sauce with some kachori or kofta or samosa.
To make an actual count of calories in the food one was eating is though not very difficult but a crafty task. Here we are listing average caloric values of certain commonly eaten Indian food items. This is not the final list and all types of suggestions are well come.
